Wine of the Week – Morrisons Chianti
2019 Vecchia Cantina Chianti – Tuscany – Italy
For my first ever blog recommendation I found this Italian classic hidden away on the bottom shelf in Morrisons proudly wearing a DOCG label around it’s neck.
Let’s address the DOCG thing…. Italian wine classification is broadly similar to the French AOC system (Appellation d’Origine Controllee) a set of rules and regulations that define and govern where and what you can do in order to label your wine something specific. I’m sure to go into this in more depth in future posts but for this first recommend let’s stop with the fact that a DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) in Italy is the highest level of classification.
Now to capture your attention this wine cost only £5….. surely the Best Value Wine in Morrisons today.

Tasting Notes
Ruby red in colour and with an initial simple berry led and fruity smell that develops after opening.
The wine has flavours of blackberry, blueberry and cherry, typical of an entry level Chianti, acidity is medium high with an initial tannin burst that fades to leave a lingering warm finish.
Easy and very pleasant to drink and one to share over a bowl of pasta or a calzone for sure.
About the Producer
To add to it’s credentials, Vecchia Cantina comes from one of the biggest producing co-operatives in Tuscany which has been around since 1937 where the common goal is “to produce high quality affordable wine”… I certainly think this one meets their requirements and Morrisons have done a very good job to find it.
This wine has been awarded a score of 94 points by Italian wine expert and sensory analyst Luca Maroni on his “Pleasantness Index”, the equivalent or competitor to the perhaps better known Parker System….. either way worthy of note.
I don’t intend to give wines scores out of 10 or out of 100 because wine is such a subjective and personal choice, I will however share my own rating system with you known as the VFM scale. (value for money) a simple equation linked to my opinion on price, accessibility and enjoyment.
I look forward to sharing wine with you.
