2019 Codorniu Cava – Sant Sadurni d’Anoia – Spain

Cava is the the unsung hero of sparkling wine, it is Spanish “Champagne”, it is made in the same Traditional method as Champagne, it is superior to Prosecco, it represents fantastic value for money when compared to both of them.

This 2019 vintage Codorniu is my recommendation as the Best Value Cava for Christmas.

Unlike gas induced fizzy wines (such as Prosecco) sparkling wines that are Traditionally made undergo a far more complex and time consuming production technique involving a second fermentation in the bottle to create the bubbles.

Next a period of ageing in the bottle with the dead yeast cells, known as lees ageing, during this process new flavours and complexity in the wine are created.

Whilst the majority of Cava’s are made with different grape varieties when compared with Champagne they share the same production methods and a similar end result, however Cava is available at a fraction of the cost of Champers and therefore is excellent value for money.

Cava is usually non-vintage (NV) however, this one is a 2019 meaning that it is produced from grapes all from that year which adds to it’s prestige and quality.

Currently on sale in Morissons at £8 however I also spotted that Sainsburys are currently doing their 25% off when you buy 6 so that makes this an absolute steal.

Tasting Notes

Bright and pale gold in colour with very fine and delicate bubbles.

Relatively simple aromas of apple and blossom, fresh, sharp apples on the palate, dry almost off dry with a pleasing hidden sweet note on the finish, no strong flavours from the lees ageing.

Easy drinking crowd pleaser as a welcoming aperitif or with seriously smoked or whisky infused salmon canapes.

About the Producer

18 generations of the Codorniu family have been making Cava for more than 450 years and is claimed as the oldest Cava and wine producer in Spain.

Located not so far from Barcelona in the Catalan Penedes DOP wine region a great place to visit and take a wine tour if you are ever in the region. The native grape varieties Macabeu, Xarel lo & Paralleda make up this budget blend however there are reserva and gran reserva Cava’s that are also worth exploring.
